Knee Support Devices

Knee Support Devices

There are several types of devices that provide support to those with knee pain.  These include straps and wraps, compression knee sleeves, and braces.  Often the terms are intermingled so this will help to understand the difference between each of the knee supports.

Straps are bands that can be used to wrap around the knee.  When placed above the knee, they can reduce stress and when placed below the knee, they can take stress off the patellar tendon.  Straps are often indicated when the consumer has tendonitis, pain experienced by runners, and other conditions.

Elastic bandages can be used to wrap your knee to decrease pain in consumers with osteoarthritis or other chronic knee conditions.  Wraps can help decrease swelling and pain after an injury.  They create slight compression and help stimulate blood flow.  They also offer extra stability to the knee.

Compression knee sleeves are made from flexible material that allows them to provide support but does not hinder movement of the joint.  They are best suited to protect the knee from future or further injury.  They add compression which increases blood flow and reduces pain and swelling.  They are not appropriate for use after injury or surgery.  Knee sleeves can be helpful if worn during exercise by helping the user to perform safer and longer.

Braces tend to be bulkier than sleeves.  They are often made of heavy metals or hard plastic. They provide more stabilization of the knee joint than a sleeve while allowing limited motion.  A brace can be worn after surgery allowing healing of ligaments and it can also be worn during activity to keep the components of the knee in place during motion.

Knee-On is a knee support compression sleeve with Velcro straps for additional support. It is stronger than a sleeve and more flexible than a brace.  It is an open patella knee support, which means it has an opening where the kneecap or patella is.  It has struts surrounding the kneecap giving extra stability to this structure.  This is especially helpful in people with any condition where the patella may not be stable such as in patellofemoral stress syndrome.  It has straps both above and below the knee.  It can be used in many chronic conditions as well during exercise, after injury, and to prevent injury.  It promotes blood flow, oxygenation to the muscles, and decreases pain and swelling.  Knee-On incorporates features of all knee supports with features of straps, wraps, compression sleeves, and braces.
