R.I.C.E. - How to Ease Knee Pain

Knee Sleeve

Many people experience knee pain at some point during their lifetime.  This can be caused by injury, infection, arthritis, or even other conditions which affect joints.  If knee pain is severe and persistent, you should consult a healthcare provider to make sure that there is no emergent cause requiring prompt professional care.

You should see your healthcare provider if you are in severe pain, the pain doesn’t improve after 2-4 weeks, you can’t move your knee, you can’t put weight on your knee, or your knee gives way when you stand.  However, if these situations are not present, there are things individuals can do to help alleviate the pain themselves.

If you have consulted with your healthcare provider and they have assured you that surgery is not necessary, you may try some of the following remedies to help ease the pain.

You may be familiar with the term “R.I.C.E”:

  1. Rest – Rest can give injury time to heal.  If there is swelling, redness, or tenderness, a period of 2 to 4 weeks can allow the knee to heal on its own without medical treatment.   It will also help prevent further damage.
  1. Ice or heat – Ice can help reduce swelling, pain, and discomfort. You can use an ice pack applied to the knee.  If you don’t have an ice pack, take a pack of frozen vegetables and place them on the knee.  You should never apply ice directly to the knee surface.  Alternatively, heat applied to the knee can help alleviate stiffness by relaxing the muscles.  Using a heating pad, taking a warm bath , deep heat cream, or a hot water bottle will suffice.  Heat should not be used initially, but after about 24 hours.
  1. Compression: Knee support devices, such as Knee-On, can be used for compression.  Compression is non-invasive and can give effective relief and support to the knee.  It can help increase blood circulation, decrease inflammation, and provide joint stability.  Make sure not to wear a compression device that is too tight so as not to cut off the blood flow.
  1. Elevation – Keeping the leg raised by propping up on a pillow can help the circulation and serve to reduce swelling.  Make sure and keep the knee above the level of the heart.

Knee-On uses a comfortable and smooth neoprene material.  Spiral memory springs made from silicone prevent side to side movement of the knee.  Self-adjusting tension straps help provide ideal compression and support for all sizes.  There is also a shock-absorbing protector silicone ring for maximum protection of the patella.
